Spain's former Vice President meets Gender Minister

Nana Oye-Lithur, Minister of Gender, Children and Social protection on Monday said her Ministry would work with the Women for Africa Foundation to train women in leadership.

She said Ghana would learn a lot from the Foundation, which was founded by leading female political leaders.

Nana Oye-Lithur made the remarks when Mrs. Maria Teresa Fernandez de la Vega, former Vice President of Spain and a Founding member of the Foundation paid a courtesy call on her in Accra, on Monday.

She said social leadership is one of the very critical factors within the socio-cultural framework and environment in Ghana, and that, the Ministry is working on maternal and infant mortality, as well as gender priority in education, in collaboration with the Foundation to help achieve the Ministry’s goals.

Mrs. Fernandez de la Vega said the foundation is working in three areas; education, health and the social sectors, where more than hundred women will be trained in leadership.

She said the foundation, under the health sector, would help reduce maternal and infant mortality by organizing training sessions for mid-wives, nurses and gynaecologist.

The former Vice President said the Foundation is working with primary school teachers, who are executing various projects under the education sector.

MrsFanadez de la Vega said the Ministry of Education has volunteered to help raise funds to sustain the project, saying that, “With one accord, we can work together to achieve a common objective.”
