Mr. Gariballa Khidir Ali Eldaw, Sudan Ambassador to Ghana, has called on Ghana’s government to assist Sudan in rebuilding efforts.
He said the ongoing conflict in the country had led to the disruption of important cultural, economic, political, and social facilities.
The Ambassador was speaking at a press briefing to provide an update on the latest development of the situation in Sudan.
He underscored the long-standing bilateral relationship between the two countries since 1967, noting that Ghana must take an interest in the rebuilding efforts of the country.
The Ambassador said the ongoing rebuilding efforts pursued by the Sudanese government had been very difficult, as the ongoing conflict was a major impediment.
He urged international organisations such as the United Nations (UN), to also play a role on their part to ensure that the rebuilding efforts were fast and quick by providing the required assistance.
Amb. Ali Eldaw addressed key happenings in the country, particularly the recent shelling of the United Arab Emirates ambassador’s residence in Khartoum.
He denied the allegations of the shelling of the residence, saying, “The property that the UAE claims was bombed, though in fact targeted, is owned by a Sudanese citizen.”
The Ambassador said the residence had not been used as a diplomatic residence since the Militia waged war in April 2023.
“The UAE Embassy, like other embassies whose premises were attacked by the UAE backed by Janjaweed militia turned by the latter into military barracks, relocated into military barracks to Port Sudan.
He said the Sudanese government has reaffirmed the country’s unwavering commitment to the sanctity and protection of diplomatic missions in strict accordance with the Vienna Convention.
“Like other diplomatic missions, the UAE Embassy operates from Port Sudan without any hassle despite the hostile role of the UAE government in the ongoing war in Sudan. We are fully aware of the Vienna Convention, so we cannot misuse such regulations that regulate and show us how we can relate with other countries,” he said.
He said the ongoing conflict had led to a dire humanitarian crisis in the country and called on the regional blocks in the Middle East to urge the UAE to halt financing of the rival militia paramilitary group.
Sudan descended into conflict in April 2023 when there was long rivalry and tension between the military and the paramilitary group.
More than 13 million people have been forced to evacuate their homes as the country is currently facing humanitarian crises.
