The growing popularity of yoga in Ghana is truly encouraging – Chargé d’Affaires of India High Commission

The Chargé d’Affaires of the Indian High Commission in Ghana, V.N. Parameswaran, has lauded the increasing participation of Ghanaians in yoga activities over the years, describing the trend as a reflection of the deepening cultural and people-to-people ties between Ghana and India.

He made the remarks at the commemoration of the 12th International Day of Yoga, which brought together scores of Ghanaian yoga enthusiasts, members of the Indian community, diplomats, and wellness practitioners. The event was held under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” highlighting the role of yoga in promoting physical, mental, and emotional well-being throughout all stages of life.

Observed annually on June 21, the International Day of Yoga was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2014 following a proposal by India. Since its inception, the global observance has sought to raise awareness of the numerous benefits of yoga and its contribution to health, harmony, and sustainable lifestyles. The day is now celebrated in more than 190 countries, making it one of the most widely observed international wellness initiatives.

This year’s theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” emphasizes the growing relevance of yoga in addressing the health challenges associated with ageing populations worldwide. Health experts and practitioners have increasingly highlighted yoga’s ability to improve flexibility, balance, cardiovascular health, mental clarity, and stress management, making it a valuable tool for enhancing quality of life across generations.

Mr. Parameswaran noted that awareness and participation in yoga among Ghanaians have grown significantly over the years, a development he said has indirectly strengthened the longstanding friendship between the two countries, which spans more than six decades of diplomatic relations.

According to him, the increasing embrace of yoga reflects shared values that unite the peoples of Ghana and India, including community, well-being, respect for tradition, and optimism for the future.

“The growing popularity of yoga in Ghana is truly encouraging. Every year, we see greater participation, greater awareness, and greater enthusiasm. This reflects the strong friendship between India and Ghana and the shared values that unite our peoples — community, well-being, respect for tradition, and hope for the future,” he said.

The Chargé d’Affaires further observed that in an era characterized by increasing social and professional pressures, yoga provides individuals with a pathway to build resilience, reconnect with themselves, and cultivate inner balance.

He explained that while many people initially turn to yoga for its physical fitness benefits, the practice ultimately offers lessons that extend beyond exercise, fostering patience, discipline, mindfulness, and emotional stability.

For many participants experiencing its benefits firsthand, yoga represents a holistic approach to health and wellness rooted in ancient Indian traditions. Through the integration of physical postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama), and meditation, practitioners are equipped with tools to promote mental clarity, emotional well-being, and overall quality of life.
