USAID Assists In Fight Against Cholera

USAID-GhanaThe Global Communities, an NGO implementing the USAID’s Water Assessment, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) project, has presented 9,600 strips of Aquatabs to the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development.

The drugs, used for making water potable, would be distributed to households in cholera endemic areas across the country in an effort to minimise the negative effects of cholera as the rainy season has set in.

Speaking at the presentation, on Wednesday, Mr Ebenezer Kye-Mensah, the Senior Capacity Building Specialist, Global Communities, said the Aquatabs would be used to treat 192,000 litres of water.

The Ministry, he said, would, however, engage the services of environmental health workers to do the distribution on its behalf.

Nii Lante Vanderpuye, a Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, said the drugs would be distributed to all the MMDAs in areas, which were prone to cholera.

He said the donation would supplement the Government’s efforts in fighting cholera with the coming of the rains this year.

He advised Ghanaians to observe the highest form of hygiene to reduce the incidence of the disease as the rainy season had begun.
