Mali’s military government has dissolved all political parties in the West African crisis state, it announced on Tuesday.
Mamani Nassiré, the minister responsible for government reforms, announced the decision in a televised statement.
In recent weeks, there have been repeated attempts to protest the planned dissolution of political parties in Mali.
The human rights organization Human Rights Watch has criticized the plan as a further blow to democracy in Mali.
In April, ministers recommended extending Mali military leader Assimi Goita’s presidency until 2030.
Goita, who seized power in two army coups in 2020 and 2021, has promised elections would be held. However, those plans have been delayed “for technical reasons” with no new timeline provided.
