U.S Embassy screens “City of Ali, hosts Azumah Nelson for post-film discussion

Ghanaian boxing legend Azumah Nelson led a reflective discussion on his career and the enduring values of sport during a special screening of the feature-length documentary City of Ali at the U.S. Embassy in Ghana on February 19, 2026.

The screening formed part of the Embassy’s America Film Club Series, an initiative that uses film to foster dialogue on culture, history and civic values. The event brought together sports administrators, students and members of Ghana’s boxing community to explore the global legacy of Muhammad Ali and its resonance within Ghana’s own sporting tradition.

Directed by Graham Shelby, City of Ali chronicles how Ali’s death in June 2016 united the city of Louisville, Kentucky, and drew global attention. The film documents the days of remembrance following the former heavyweight champion’s passing, highlighting interfaith tributes, civic pride and the city’s efforts to honour one of its most iconic sons.

Ali, a three-time world heavyweight champion, is widely regarded as one of the greatest athletes of the 20th century. Beyond his achievements in the ring, including his victories over Sonny Liston, Joe Frazier and George Foreman, he became a global symbol of conviction after refusing induction into the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, a stance that led to the suspension of his boxing license and the loss of his heavyweight title before it was later restored.

His funeral in Louisville drew an estimated crowd of more than 100,000 people along the procession route, while millions more around the world followed the ceremony through international media coverage. The moment underscored Ali’s unique status as both a sporting icon and a cultural figure whose influence transcended boxing.

At the Accra screening, Nelson shared personal reflections on his own journey in professional boxing, recounting the discipline, resilience and national pride that defined his career. Known as “The Professor,” Nelson held the WBC featherweight title from 1984 to 1988 and the WBC super-featherweight title from 1988 to 1997, cementing his place as one of Africa’s most accomplished boxers.

Nelson’s career, much like Ali’s, extended beyond championship belts. In Ghana, his victories in the 1980s and 1990s coincided with periods of economic and political transition, and his international triumphs became rallying points for national unity and pride. His technical skill, endurance and sportsmanship earned him recognition as one of the greatest boxers to emerge from the African continent.

While Ali competed in the heavyweight division and became a towering global personality whose activism reshaped the relationship between sport and politics, Nelson’s legacy is rooted in his consistency and longevity in the lighter weight classes. Both men, however, are celebrated for embodying courage, faith and a deep connection to their communities.

Among attendees at the event were officials from the National Sports Authority, including Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, as well as students from Frafraha Senior High School in Accra. Discussions centred on patriotism, accountability and the power of sport as a tool for social cohesion.

The screening underscored the broader cultural diplomacy efforts of the United States in Ghana, highlighting shared values expressed through sport and storytelling. By pairing Ali’s global legacy with Nelson’s national impact, the event illustrated how boxing, though fought within the ropes, can shape identity, inspire generations and strengthen bonds across borders.
