Ghana, Italy Ambassadors hold talks on advancing cooperation

The Ambassador of Ghana to Italy, H.E. Mona-Helen Kabuki Quartey, has received the Italian Ambassador to Ghana, Laura Ranalli, who paid a courtesy call on her at the Ghanaian Chancery in Rome.

The meeting provided an opportunity for the two ambassadors to establish a strong working relationship and exchange views on issues of mutual interest, with a focus on strengthening economic and agricultural cooperation between Ghana and Italy.

Discussions centred on expanding collaboration in Ghana’s agricultural sector, including efforts to follow up on BF Group’s interest in exploring investment opportunities and developing modern, sustainable agri-food systems in the country.

The engagement builds on a Memorandum of Understanding signed in April 2025 between Ghana’s Ministry of Food and Agriculture and BF International Best Fields Best Food Limited to support sustainable and modern agriculture projects in Ghana. The partnership seeks to strengthen Ghana’s agri-food ecosystem through collaboration between public institutions, the Italian private sector and technical partners.

The agreement forms part of Italy’s broader Mattei Plan for Africa, under which Ghana has been identified as a partner country for initiatives aimed at promoting investment, skills development and sustainable economic growth.

Agriculture has increasingly emerged as an important area of Ghana–Italy cooperation. In 2019, Italian energy company ENI inaugurated the Okuafo Pa agricultural training project in Ghana, aimed at strengthening farmers’ skills and promoting more sustainable agricultural practices.

The ambassadors also explored broader pathways for attracting Italian investment into Ghana, with discussions focusing on strengthening institutional linkages and creating opportunities for partnerships between Ghanaian businesses and Italian investors.

Italy already has a significant economic footprint in Ghana, with Italian companies historically contributing to major projects including the Akosombo Dam, the Tema Oil Refinery and ENI’s Offshore Cape Three Points oil and gas project. The OCTP project, valued at about US$7 billion, remains one of the largest private investments in West Africa.

Beyond energy and infrastructure, technology and industrial equipment constitute a major share of Italian exports to Ghana, while the Italian Trade Agency works through the Embassy in Accra to facilitate commercial partnerships and business opportunities between companies in both countries.

The two ambassadors also discussed opportunities to deepen trade, investment and private-sector cooperation, reflecting a shared interest in translating the strong diplomatic relationship between Ghana and Italy into greater commercial and investment outcomes.

Italy’s Ambassador to Ghana, Laura Ranalli, has described Ghana as one of Italy’s priority partners for development cooperation, noting that bilateral relations have intensified in recent years alongside growing trade and investment ties.

The meeting in Rome is expected to strengthen diplomatic coordination between the two missions while supporting efforts to identify concrete opportunities for cooperation in agriculture, trade, investment and private-sector development.
