Ghanaians in Qatar urged to register for assistance, evacuation

The Embassy of the Republic of Ghana in Doha, Qatar, has directed Ghanaian nationals currently residing in the country to register their details with the consular section to aid communication and evacuation if necessary, amid rising security tensions in the Gulf region.

In a statement, the Embassy said the registration exercise is a precautionary measure in light of escalating regional tensions following military exchanges involving the United States, Israel and Iran. The Embassy emphasized that submitted information would be treated with the confidentiality it deserves and used only for official emergency and consular purposes.

“In view of the heightened tensions and unrest within the region, this registration will enable the Embassy to effectively communicate with, assist, and, if necessary, coordinate evacuation arrangements for Ghanaian citizens,” the statement said,

The Embassy provided a registration link for Ghanaians to upload their details and urged all nationals in Qatar to complete the process as promptly as possible.

Tensions have risen sharply across the Middle East after U.S. and Israeli military operations targeted Iranian facilities, triggering a broad series of Iranian retaliatory strikes across the Gulf.

Iran has launched waves of ballistic missiles and drones toward multiple countries in the region that host U.S. forces or are allied with Western powers. Gulf Arab states including Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Bahrain have reported damage and civilian injuries as a result of the strikes, although many attacks have been intercepted by air defence systems.

In Qatar, authorities confirmed that the country’s defence forces intercepted successive waves of Iranian missiles and drones. Incidents included missiles striking Al Udeid Air Base, a key U.S. facility, and debris from intercepted launches causing limited fires in Doha, though no widespread casualties have been reported.

Regional responses have been swift. Qatar, the United States, Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the UAE issued a joint statement condemning Iran’s attacks as violations of sovereignty and a threat to regional stability, while emphasising their right to self-defence.

The crisis has also heavily disrupted air travel across the Middle East. Airspace closures in Qatar and other Gulf states have forced airlines, including Qatar Airways, Emirates and Etihad, to suspend or reroute flights, stranding thousands of travellers and affecting global aviation schedules.

Qatar’s Ministry of Interior reported a total of 16 injuries related to falling debris from intercepted missile fragments since the escalation began, and authorities have urged residents to follow official safety instructions and remain vigilant.

The broader conflict, which includes U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iranian targets and Iranian counter-attacks, has prompted emergency diplomatic responses, including a United Nations Security Council session where the UN chief condemned attacks by all sides and urged a return to diplomacy to prevent further escalation.

Oil markets and shipping through the strategic Strait of Hormuz have also been affected, as the crisis raised concerns over the security of global energy supplies.
