Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has held separate meetings with the heads of mission of the United States, Israel and Iran in Accra as part of diplomatic efforts to assess the ongoing military escalation in the Middle East and safeguard Ghanaian nationals in the region.
The meetings took place at Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and brought together senior diplomatic representatives of the three countries involved in the rapidly evolving crisis. The discussions focused on gaining clearer insights into the unfolding situation and its implications for regional stability.
Among those present were Roey Gilad, Israel’s Ambassador to Ghana; Ali Ghomshi, Iran’s Ambassador to Ghana; and Rolf Olson, Chargé d’Affaires ad interim of the United States to Ghana. Each envoy met the minister separately as part of Ghana’s diplomatic engagement with key actors connected to the conflict.
According to the Foreign Ministry, the meetings were aimed at obtaining detailed briefings on the military developments and the broader geopolitical dynamics driving the escalation across the Middle East.
A central focus of the discussions was the safety and protection of Ghanaian nationals living or working in the affected countries. Ghana requested assurances from the respective diplomatic missions regarding measures being taken to ensure that foreign nationals, including Ghanaians, remain protected amid the rising tensions.
The minister also sought cooperation from the diplomatic missions to facilitate the possible evacuation of Ghanaian citizens should the security situation deteriorate further. Ghanaian authorities are currently monitoring developments closely while preparing contingency plans to support nationals in the region if necessary.
The diplomatic outreach forms part of Ghana’s broader foreign policy approach of engaging all relevant actors through dialogue, especially during periods of international crisis that could affect its citizens abroad.
The Middle East has witnessed heightened tensions in recent weeks following a series of military exchanges involving Israel, Iran and allied forces in the region. The escalation has raised concerns among governments worldwide about the safety of foreign nationals and the potential for a wider regional conflict.
For Ghana, the situation carries particular significance as hundreds of its citizens reside and work across parts of the Middle East in sectors ranging from education and healthcare to construction and domestic services.
Ghana has historically maintained diplomatic relations with both Israel and Iran while also sustaining close strategic ties with the United States. This balanced diplomatic posture allows Accra to maintain open channels of communication with all parties during periods of geopolitical tension.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it will continue to engage with diplomatic missions and international partners while monitoring developments in the region to ensure the safety and welfare of Ghanaian nationals.
