Ukraine Embassy in Ghana opens book of condolences following deadly June 2 Russia aerial attacks

The Embassy of Ukraine in Ghana has opened an online Book of Condolences in memory of victims of Russia’s latest missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian territory.

The initiative is intended to honour the dead, express solidarity with affected families, and provide a channel for the international community in Ghana to send messages of sympathy and support.

The attack, which occurred on June 2, 2026, targeted multiple Ukrainian cities including Kyiv, Dnipro, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Poltava. According to Ukrainian authorities, at least 17 people were killed and more than 100 others sustained injuries of varying severity. Emergency response teams continue search and rescue operations in several impacted locations as assessments of damage and casualties are still ongoing.

In response to the tragedy, the Embassy of Ukraine in Ghana has announced that it is receiving condolence messages from June 3 to June 6, 2026. Members of the public, diplomatic missions, and international partners have been invited to submit messages of sympathy, solidarity, and support via the Embassy’s official email address, ukremb.gh@gmail.com.

Russia launched one of its most extensive aerial assaults of the war on June 2, 2026, firing 73 missiles and 656 drones in a coordinated overnight operation. Ukrainian Air Force reports indicated that the strike included ballistic, cruise, and hypersonic missiles, alongside large numbers of attack and decoy drones, underscoring the scale and complexity of the offensive.

While Ukrainian air defence systems intercepted or neutralised a significant proportion of the incoming weapons, several penetrated defensive layers, striking at least 38 locations across the country.

The cities of Kyiv and Dnipro reportedly suffered the heaviest impact, with residential buildings, critical infrastructure, and civilian facilities damaged in multiple districts. The assault resulted in widespread destruction, power disruptions, and renewed strain on emergency and medical services already stretched by prolonged conflict.

The attack also comes against the backdrop of a protracted war in Ukraine, now in its fourth year since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022. Despite periodic diplomatic engagements and limited negotiations on humanitarian issues, a comprehensive ceasefire remains elusive.

Both sides continue to engage in sustained long-range strikes and frontline combat operations, while international actors intensify calls for de-escalation and renewed peace efforts. Analysts note that the continued escalation in drone and missile warfare reflects a shift in the conflict’s dynamics, with growing emphasis on aerial saturation tactics and infrastructure targeting.
