Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku‑Agyemang has arrived in Barcelona to participate in the 4th High-Level Meeting of the Initiative in Defence of Democracy, aimed at strengthening democratic governance and multilateral cooperation among participating nations.
The fourth edition of the summit is convened by Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez and Brazil’s president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. It brings together world leaders, policymakers, and international relations experts to deliberate on emerging threats to democracy, global governance challenges, and the need for renewed multilateral collaboration.
Upon arrival, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang was warmly received by members of the Ghanaian community in Spain, led by Ghana’s Ambassador to Spain, Kalsoume Sinare Baffoe. The Vice President interacted with the diaspora, reconnecting with Ghanaians whose contributions through remittances, investments, and professional achievements continue to support Ghana’s national development.
The reception underscored not only her participation in the high-level summit but also highlighted the importance of Ghana’s diaspora community in Spain. The Ghanaian community has played a significant role in strengthening bilateral ties, contributing to economic development, and promoting Ghana’s cultural and diplomatic presence abroad.
Her visit also comes at a time when the government of Spain, led by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, has rolled out a landmark regularization programme expected to grant legal status to approximately 500,000 migrants. The move, described by the Spanish government as a strategy to strengthen economic growth and social inclusion, contrasts with stricter immigration approaches seen in parts of the West, including the United States.
Ambassador Kalsoume Sinare Baffoe later briefed the Vice President on preparations undertaken for the visit and outlined the programme of activities, including bilateral engagements, high-level meetings, and interactions with international partners attending the summit.
The Initiative in Defence of Democracy summit is expected to focus on strengthening democratic institutions, combating misinformation, and reinforcing international cooperation in addressing global governance challenges. Leaders will also deliberate on safeguarding electoral integrity, promoting inclusive governance, and addressing the growing threat of democratic backsliding across regions.
Additionally, the meeting will examine the role of multilateral institutions in responding to global crises, including conflicts, economic instability, and climate-related challenges. The summit seeks to reaffirm commitments to democratic values while fostering stronger partnerships between participating countries.
The Barcelona meeting builds on previous editions of the initiative, positioning the platform as an emerging forum for dialogue among democratic nations. Ghana’s participation signals its continued commitment to democratic governance, international cooperation, and active engagement in shaping the evolving global democratic architecture.
