The Sunyani Municipal Assembly has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with a Canadian developer and investors to convert all solid waste generated in the municipality into energy of not less than 25 megawatts.
Under the agreement, additional 15 megawatts of solar energy plant would also be built. The projects are estimated at the cost of $250 million dollars.
A Canadian company, Northern Watertek, and its engineering partner SNC Lavalin and Emphasis Global, their local representative will finance the project, Mr Kwasi Oppong-Ababio, Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive, has said.
Addressing the third ordinary meeting of the fourth session of the assembly in Sunyani, Mr Oppong-Ababio said the project would be situated at the assembly’s landfill site in Sunyani.
He said all feasibility studies required for engineering works and commencement of the project as well as other documentations had been prepared and approved by the company.
Mr Oppong-Ababio said the investors had signed similar MoU with the University of Energy and Natural Resources to promote research, training, exchange of staff and students.
These are in the areas of environmental engineering, renewable energy, climate science and climate change, waste water treatment, general energy and natural resources management, he added.
