The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on behalf of the Government of Ghana, has initiated high-level diplomatic engagements with authorities of the Republic of Singapore to establish a permanent diplomatic mission in the Asian city-state.
It is in a bid to expand Ghana’s diplomatic footprint and strengthen bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, and technology.
The Ghanaian delegation, led by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, James Gyakye Quayson, held discussions with the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Social and Family Development of Singapore, Zhulkarnain Abdul Rahim, during a working visit from 10th to 15th April.
The engagement formally communicated Ghana’s intention to establish a resident mission in Singapore to enhance consular services for Ghanaian nationals and deepen institutional cooperation between the two countries.
The initiative forms part of a broader foreign policy drive by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to expand Ghana’s global diplomatic presence through the establishment of new missions and permanent chanceries. The policy also seeks to reduce reliance on rented diplomatic premises, which reportedly cost the state $15 million annually , while strengthening long-term diplomatic infrastructure.
It also aligns with earlier commitments outlined at the Conference of Heads of Mission and Orientation Programme for newly appointed envoys in September 2025, where government announced plans to establish additional diplomatic and consular missions in strategic locations including Massachusetts (United States), Dublin (Ireland), Lisbon (Portugal), and Singapore by 2026.
Recent expansions under this diplomatic modernisation agenda include the opening of a new chancery in Ethiopia in February, alongside planned or ongoing missions in Brazil, aimed at strengthening South–South cooperation. Other recent developments include the reopening or establishment of missions in Port of Spain (Trinidad and Tobago), Belgrade (Serbia), and Budapest (Hungary), reflecting Ghana’s renewed engagement across the Caribbean, Europe, and emerging markets.
According to the Ministry, the planned mission in Singapore is a strategic move to deepen Ghana’s engagement with key global economic hubs in Asia, particularly in areas such as trade facilitation, institutional cooperation, and technical exchange. Singaporean authorities, in turn, expressed commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Ghana and expanding collaboration in investment, capacity building, and development cooperation.
