Madam Margit Thomsen, the Danish Ambassador to Ghana, has commended Ghana for its religious tolerance and expressed the hope that such mutual understanding would contribute to a peaceful election.
Madam Thomsen said the mutual understanding between Muslims and Christians and the various churches with different doctrines and teachings was the key to national development and cohesion and commended the Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) for its pivotal role in helping to hold the country together.
The Danish Ambassador was speaking in Koforidua, at a public forum organized by the CCG and the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) on the theme: “The Church’s political role in nation building and election 2016”.
She commended the CCG for embarking on a campaign to educate the Christian community and other smaller groups on their role towards a peaceful election in December as well as towards nation building.
Madam Thomsen underscored the need for the civil society organizations (CSOs) to focus on the youth on their rights and responsibilities in this election so that they would not allow themselves to be used as tools for political violence.
She pledged the support of her country in every endeavor that sought to make the elections free and fair to sustain Ghana’s democratic dispensation.
Madam Thomsen in the company of her husband had earlier joined the General-Secretary of the CCG, Reverend Dr Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong at Akuapem-Akropong to campaign for peace at the coming elections.
Reverend Dr Opuni-Frimpong thanked the Ambassador for the interest shown in the CCG activities towards free and fair election in December and the release of funds from the UNDP to support the activities.
He assured the Ambassador that the CCG and its other religious groups would not relent in ensuring that Ghana goes through the electioneering period free of violence and the results would be acceptable by all political stakeholders.
