Diplomatic Corps commends Ghana’s peaceful transition after December 7 election

The Dean of the Diplomatic Corps and Ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco to the Republic of Ghana, Her Excellency Mrs. Imane Ouaadil, has commended Ghana for its smooth democratic transition on January 7, 2025, describing it as a reaffirmation of the country’s standing as a vanguard of democracy in the sub-region and across the continent.

She characterised the transition as a defining milestone in Ghana’s democratic evolution, a cornerstone of the enduring constitutional order that has sustained the Fourth Republic since 1992, when the country transitioned from military rule to multiparty democracy.

Speaking on behalf of the international community during the presentation of New Year greetings at the Jubilee House, Ambassador Ouaadil praised Ghana’s political stability, underscoring the significance of its consistent adherence to the peaceful transfer of power, a principle that distinguishes the country in a region where constitutional disruptions have become increasingly frequent.

“Your Excellency, the year 2025 bore witness to a significant milestone in the democratic evolution of this illustrious nation. The international community wishes to formally recognise the Republic of Ghana for the grace and stability with which it navigated its recent transition of authority. By upholding the tenets of the peaceful transfer of power, Ghana has once again signalled its leadership as a vanguard of democracy in Africa,” she stated.

The Dean noted that political stability remains a foundational pillar for diplomatic engagement. For the diplomatic community, she observed, predictable constitutional governance provides the confidence necessary to deepen bilateral cooperation, expand economic partnerships and sustain long-term multilateral commitments.

Ghana’s democratic record under the Fourth Republic has spanned thirty-four years, marked by eight successful general elections and five peaceful alternations of power between its two dominant political parties. This continuity has earned the country international acclaim as a stable democratic anchor within West Africa.

Her remarks come against the backdrop of a sub-region grappling with democratic regression and rising insecurity. In recent years, West and Central Africa have witnessed a resurgence of military coups and attempted takeovers, particularly within the Sahel belt. Countries such as Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger have experienced successive coups, disrupting constitutional rule and straining regional diplomatic frameworks.

Beyond unconstitutional changes of government, insurgencies driven by extremist groups have intensified across parts of the Sahel, exploiting governance gaps, economic fragility and porous borders. These security challenges have not only destabilised national governments but also complicated regional cooperation mechanisms under ECOWAS and the African Union.

The resurgence of military intervention in politics has raised concerns about democratic backsliding across parts of the continent, prompting debates about constitutionalism, governance legitimacy and the future of civilian authority in fragile states. In this evolving landscape, Ghana’s adherence to constitutional order stands in contrast, reinforcing its image as a stabilising force and credible democratic partner within Africa’s diplomatic architecture.

Ambassador Ouaadil’s commendation therefore situates Ghana’s recent transition not merely as a domestic political event, but as a broader continental signal, one that underscores the enduring relevance of democratic norms at a time when such norms face mounting pressures.
