Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has disclosed that 85 Ghanaian nationals were evacuated from Cambodia between March and May 2026, while 76 others have expressed their desire to return home despite false claims circulating online about an alleged directive requiring foreigners to leave the country.
The Ministry clarified that some Ghanaian nationals in Cambodia had, prior to the circulation of the false reports, already indicated their intention to voluntarily return home.
It further revealed that diplomatic engagements between Ghana and Cambodian authorities have confirmed that the purported statement ordering African nationals to exit Cambodia by May 31, 2026, is entirely fake and did not originate from any official Cambodian institution.
The false document had alleged that African nationals, including Ghanaians and Kenyans, were under an ultimatum to leave the country following the expiry of a visa waiver, with warnings of arrest, imprisonment, and financial penalties for non-compliance.
“The Ministry wishes to assure the public that following diplomatic engagements with the relevant Cambodian authorities, it has been confirmed that the said notice is absolutely fake and was not issued by any state institution in Cambodia,” a statement from the Ministry said.
Despite these clarifications, the Ministry confirmed that evacuation efforts have already facilitated the safe return of 85 Ghanaian nationals between March and May 2026. It added that arrangements are underway to assist an additional 76 nationals who have expressed willingness to be repatriated.
The evacuation exercise was coordinated through Ghana’s High Commission in Malaysia, which is concurrently accredited to the Kingdom of Cambodia, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
“The Government of the Republic of Ghana through its High Commission in Malaysia, which is concurrently accredited to the Kingdom of Cambodia, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, has already facilitated the evacuation of eighty-five (85) Ghanaian nationals between March and May, 2026,” the statement noted.
The Ministry urged the general public and the Ghanaian media to disregard the discredited document and avoid sharing unverified information that could cause unnecessary fear and anxiety among affected individuals and their families.
The Ministry further assured that government will continue to work closely with relevant authorities to ensure the safety, welfare, and protection of Ghanaian nationals abroad.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working in conjunction with competent authorities in Cambodia to ensure the safe return of these Ghanaians,” it stated, adding that Ghana commends the Government of the Kingdom of Cambodia for its cooperation.
