Ethiopia’s Charge d’Affaires pays courtesy visit on Liberian Ambassador

The Charge d’Affaires of the Ethiopian Embassy in Ghana, Asaye Alemayehu (PhD), on February 10, 2026, paid a courtesy visit to Liberia’s Ambassador to Ghana, Musu J. Ruhle, in a diplomatic engagement aimed at strengthening relations between Ethiopia and Liberia. The meeting forms part of ongoing efforts by both countries to reinforce bilateral cooperation and enhance collaboration within continental and multilateral frameworks.

During the discussions, the two envoys explored avenues to deepen engagement in areas of mutual interest, while reaffirming their commitment to African unity and collective advancement. The visit reflects a shared understanding of the importance of sustained diplomatic dialogue in consolidating partnerships between African states across regions.

Ethiopia holds a significant diplomatic position on the continent as host of the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa, a role that places it at the centre of continental policy coordination and peace and security deliberations. The country has consistently played an active role in African Union-led initiatives and regional peace efforts within the Horn of Africa and beyond.

Liberia, for its part, continues to advance its diplomatic engagement through democratic governance, post-conflict reconstruction experience, and active participation in regional and international institutions. Since the end of its civil conflict in the early 2000s, Liberia has strengthened its institutional frameworks and maintained constructive foreign relations within West Africa and globally.

Both Ethiopia and Liberia share a distinctive historical legacy as African nations that were not formally colonised by European powers. Ethiopia preserved its sovereignty following its decisive victory at the Battle of Adwa in 1896, despite a brief occupation by Italy between 1936 and 1941. Liberia, founded in 1822 and independent since 1847, remained outside formal European colonial administration, though historically influenced by American political traditions.

This shared historical trajectory often informs diplomatic narratives between the two states, reinforcing themes of sovereignty, resilience, and self-determination within Africa’s broader historical context. Their engagements therefore carry symbolic weight, particularly in discussions centred on African agency and continental cooperation.

The visit also comes at a time of strengthening intra-African connectivity. Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest network carrier, resumed passenger flights to Liberia’s capital, Monrovia, on November 30, 2024. The restored air link enhances connectivity between East and West Africa, facilitating trade, tourism, official exchanges, and private sector engagement.

The courtesy call ultimately underscores Ethiopia and Liberia’s commitment to constructive diplomacy, regional cooperation, and strengthened bilateral ties grounded in shared historical experience and contemporary continental engagement.
