Fugu sends ripples across Moscow with GTA promotion

Ghana’s iconic Fugu fabric has made a bold statement in Moscow, capturing attention at a major trade exhibition in Russia and reinforcing the global commercial potential of Ghanaian cultural exports.

The traditional handwoven textile, long associated with northern Ghana, drew significant interest from international buyers and cultural enthusiasts, symbolising the country’s expanding footprint in global creative and tourism markets.

The Ghanaian delegation to the high-level Trade and Tourism Mission was led by the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), Maame Efua Houadjeto, who represented the country in strategic engagements aimed at positioning Ghana as a viable investment and tourism destination. The four-day mission combined trade promotion with tourism diplomacy, showcasing Ghana’s cultural assets, investment climate and hospitality potential.

Addressing plenary sessions and serving as a panelist in strategic discussions on trade and tourism, Houadjeto highlighted Ghana’s stable political environment, growing infrastructure base and expanding tourism ecosystem. She emphasised that Ghana offers investors a compelling mix of cultural authenticity, business-friendly policies and untapped growth opportunities across multiple sectors.

Through targeted investor engagements, the delegation promoted opportunities in hospitality and eco-tourism development, creative arts and cultural exports, infrastructure partnerships and destination marketing collaborations. The exhibition provided a platform to connect Ghanaian enterprises with Russian and international investors seeking partnerships in emerging African markets.

The prominence of Fugu at the exhibition underscored Ghana’s push to elevate indigenous textiles and creative products onto the global stage. Beyond its cultural symbolism, Fugu represents a growing creative economy sector with export potential in fashion, design and cultural tourism. The Moscow showcase reinforced how cultural regalia can serve not only as heritage markers but also as viable commercial commodities.

Ghana’s tourism sector has recorded strong performance in recent years. According to the Ghana Statistical Service, visitor expenditure reached GH¢15.42 billion, with daily spending averaging GH¢24 million. Of this figure, overnight visitors contributed GH¢15.18 billion, highlighting the significant economic impact of inbound tourism on the national economy.

Between the last quarter of 2022 and the third quarter of 2023, Ghana recorded a total of 901,448 international visitors. Of this number, 12,864 were same-day visitors, while 888,584 were overnight visitors, representing 98.6 percent of total inbound arrivals. These figures reflect the steady recovery and growth of Ghana’s tourism industry following global travel disruptions.

Ghana continues to attract international visitors with its rich cultural heritage and historical significance. Sites linked to the transatlantic slave trade, colonial history and the country’s independence movement remain major draws. Attractions such as the Bisa Abrewa Museum, Cape Coast Castle, the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, Independence Square, the Arts Centre and the National Museum continue to anchor Ghana’s reputation as a heritage tourism hub in West Africa.

The Moscow trade exhibition therefore represents more than a cultural showcase; it signals Ghana’s broader strategy to integrate tourism promotion, creative industry exports and international trade diplomacy. By leveraging cultural identity as an economic asset, Ghana aims to deepen global partnerships, expand export markets and solidify its status as a leading tourism and cultural destination on the African continent.
