The High Commissioner of India to Ghana, Shri Surinder Bhagat, has urged Indian businesses operating in Ghana to build long-term partnerships that prioritise local value addition, skills transfer and job creation.
He made the call at the opening of the second West Africa Agri Show (WAAS) and the third National Annual Livestock Day in Accra, where he reaffirmed India’s readiness to deepen cooperation with Ghana in agriculture, livestock and agro-processing.
Mr Bhagat emphasized that India was prepared to share its expertise, technology and experience with Ghana to support efforts to strengthen domestic food production and improve agricultural productivity.
He highlighted opportunities for collaboration in animal health and veterinary services, dairy and poultry development, agro-processing and post-harvest management, as well as agricultural machinery and irrigation solutions.
The High Commissioner also encouraged Indian exhibitors and businesses to establish sustainable partnerships with Ghanaian counterparts, stressing that investments should contribute to local capacity development rather than focus solely on commercial returns.
The two-day event, held on September 29 and 30, brought together farmers, agribusinesses, technology providers, investors, policymakers and other stakeholders from Ghana, India and across the region to showcase agricultural technologies, machinery and solutions across the agriculture and livestock value chains.
The event was organised by Azalix Business Media in partnership with the Ghana National Association of Farmers and Fishermen, with the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry and the High Commission of India among the participating partners.
Deputy Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Sampson Ahi, who represented President John Dramani Mahama at the opening, said the government was positioning agriculture as a key driver of industrialisation, job creation and the 24-hour economy.
He said the government was working to create an enabling environment for investment in the agricultural value chain, including measures to attract investment in agro-processing and improve productivity.
Mr Bhagat noted that India’s experience in areas including animal husbandry, veterinary services and agricultural technology could complement Ghana’s efforts to strengthen food production and food security.
He also encouraged Ghanaian businesses to explore opportunities in India’s agricultural technology, industrial equipment and markets, while urging Indian companies to use Ghana as a platform for building partnerships across the wider West African market.
The WAAS 2026 programme featured agricultural machinery, livestock and poultry, irrigation, food processing and packaging, agricultural technology, animal health, aquaculture and other areas of the agricultural value chain. The organisers said the exhibition was designed to connect businesses, farmers, investors and policymakers and facilitate new partnerships and market opportunities across West Africa.
