Mr. Birender Singh, the High Commissioner of India to Ghana on Wednesday sought for Ghana Support for India’s candidature to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) council election.
The ICAO Council election slated for September during the General Assemble meeting in Montreal Canada.
The ICAO is a UN specialized agency, established by States in 1944 to manage the administration and governance of the Convention on International Civil Aviation (Chicago Convention).
It works with the Convention’s 193 Member States and industry groups to reach consensus on international civil aviation Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) and policies in support of a safe, efficient, secure, economically sustainable and environmentally responsible civil aviation sector.
Mr Singh is lobbying for Ghana’s vote to the Council, which is a permanent body of the Organization responsible to the Assembly through the Aviation Minister, Mr Koffi Adda.
To facilitate that, the High Commissioner has paid a curtsey call on the Minister to inform Ghana of India’s interest in contesting for the slot on the Council; and also discuss technology transfer in the aviation sector, use of solar energy and other related industrial issues for the mutual benefit of the two countries.
The ICAO Council is composed of 36 Member States elected by the Assembly for a three-year term.
In the election, adequate representation is given to States of chief importance in air transport, States not otherwise included but which make the largest contribution to the provision of facilities for international civil air navigation and States not otherwise included whose designation would ensure that all major geographic areas of the world were represented on the Council.
Mr Singh said Ghana was the founding member of the International Solar Lens an initiative of India together with France.
Mr. Adda, said, Ghana had over the decade collaborated with other countries within the Aviation centres even though Ghana holds fewer airports.
He added that capacity building between Ghana and India would help the two countries to improve and retain knowledge, equipment and resources needed to work effectively.
“We will therefore see to it that young men and women from Ghana would participate in the training of Technical engineering fields in India’s technical institutions to make management of airports efficiently and effective in Ghana,” he noted.
