Korea Republic’s Ambassador donates Taekwondo equipment to Federation in Ghana

The Republic of Korea has donated taekwondo five boxes of protective equipment to the Ghana Taekwondo Federation (GTF) to strengthen athlete development and expand access to the sport,

The equipment was presented by the Republic of Korea’s Ambassador to Ghana, Park Kyongsig,on October 21, 2026, with support from the Korean government.

The donation forms part of the embassy’s sustained support for taekwondo development in Ghana, where the federation is working to improve training conditions, strengthen technical capacity and widen participation beyond established sporting centres.

Ambassador Park expressed delight that Ghanaian athletes would have access to new equipment to improve their training and pledged the embassy’s continued support, including facilitating technical assistance and helping to secure additional equipment.

““This underlines our commitment to the development of the sport in Ghana. We have given you first class rated uniforms and protective equipment. They have very good sensors to enhance scoring and to make the work of umpires easier,” he stated

It comes a month after the 16th Korean Ambassador’s Cup Taekwondo Championship, held at the Borteyman Sports Complex in September 2026, where Ambassador Park also donated about 12 boxes of taekwondo equipment to support athletes and the federation.

The latest intervention builds on an earlier donation in 2023, when the Korean Embassy provided equipment, including three sets of KPNP electronic protectors and scoring systems valued at US$33,000, to the GTF ahead of the 13th African Games hosted by Ghana.

Electronic protector and scoring systems help register valid strikes during competitions, reducing reliance on manual scoring and supporting more consistent officiating.

The repeated support comes as the GTF seeks to consolidate the sport’s presence across Ghana, with about 90 clubs operating nationwide, while extending opportunities to young people who may have limited access to specialised sporting facilities.

The federation has identified funding constraints as a challenge to the development of taekwondo, particularly in sustaining programmes, improving training infrastructure and expanding participation.

The need for investment also extends to the regions. Taekwondo practitioners in the Upper East Region have previously appealed for additional equipment and dedicated training facilities to improve athletes’ preparation for competitions.

The GTF’s plans to establish training centres in underserved communities are intended to bring the sport closer to young people, improve accessibility and nurture talent at the grassroots level.

Beyond providing equipment, the Korean Embassy’s support reflects the role of sports cooperation in strengthening relations between Ghana and the Republic of Korea. The Korean Ambassador’s Cup has also provided a platform for athletes to compete and showcase their skills while promoting taekwondo locally.

For the federation, the challenge will be to translate the equipment support into sustained improvements in training, athlete development and regional participation. This will require continued investment in facilities, qualified coaches and grassroots programmes to ensure that opportunities in taekwondo extend beyond athletes who already have access to established clubs.

“We are so grateful for this presentation. It has come at the right time because preparation would soon commence for qualifers of some major tournaments” the president of the Federation, Mr. Frederick Otu Lartey stated.

The latest donation therefore adds to a growing record of Korean support for the sport in Ghana, as the federation works to build a broader base of participation and improve the conditions under which athletes train and compete.
