President John Dramani Mahama has been conferred with an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Public Administration by Yonsei University in Seoul, Republic of Korea, in recognition of his contributions to Ghana’s governance, democratic development, and public sector transformation.
The honour was presented during a formal academic ceremony at the prestigious South Korean university as part of Mahama’s official visit to the Republic of Korea aimed at strengthening diplomatic and economic relations between the two countries.
Yonsei University cited Mahama’s leadership in promoting democratic governance, infrastructure development and international cooperation as key reasons for awarding him the honorary doctorate. The university also commended his efforts to position Ghana as a stable democracy and a strategic partner for global collaboration.
In his acceptance speech, Mahama expressed gratitude to the university for the recognition, describing it as a profound honour not only for himself but also for the people of Ghana. He noted that the award reflects the shared values of education, truth and service that underpin both Ghanaian and Korean academic traditions.
“The conferment of this honorary doctorate by Yonsei University acts as a bridge linking two countries, two continents, and two peoples committed to creating a better future for our world. Yonsei University stands as a beacon of educational excellence, not only in the Republic of Korea, but across the whole of Asia and the rest of the world.” he said.
Mahama also reflected on his formative years at the University of Ghana, particularly his time at Commonwealth Hall, where he said the hall’s motto, “Truth Stands,” shaped his outlook on leadership and public service.
He drew parallels between the motto of Yonsei University, “Truth Will Set You Free”, and Ghana’s educational philosophy, which emphasizes intellectual curiosity, ethical leadership and the pursuit of knowledge for national development.
According to Mahama, universities play a critical role in shaping leaders capable of navigating complex global challenges. He encouraged students to embrace critical thinking, civic responsibility and innovation in addressing issues confronting modern societies.
The President also highlighted the importance of strengthening academic, technological and economic cooperation between Ghana and the Republic of Korea, noting that both countries can benefit from deeper collaboration in education, research and industrial development.
Mahama’s visit to South Korea includes engagements with government officials, business leaders and academic institutions aimed at expanding partnerships in areas such as technology, energy, infrastructure and mineral value addition.
The honorary doctorate from Yonsei University adds to a number of international recognitions received by Mahama over the years for his leadership and contributions to governance, diplomacy and development across Africa and the global stage.
