Mahama hopeful of African Union Chairman after securing unanimous endorsement

President John Dramani Mahama has received unanimous endorsement from the ECOWAS Council of Ministers to be elected as the next Chairperson of the African Union when West Africa assumes the chairmanship in 2027.

The Council of Ministers recommended that the Authority of Heads of State and Government formally adopt President Mahama’s candidacy on Sunday, following his emergence as the sole candidate for this prestigious African seat, one that Ghana has held on several previous occasions.

This unanimous endorsement underscores Ghana’s pivotal role in the region, reinforcing its reputation as a beacon of democracy, leadership, and African sovereignty.

The ninety-fifth Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers, held today in Abuja, Nigeria, demonstrated a united resolve in support of the Ghanaian president, consistent with Articles 10, 11, and 12 of the ECOWAS Revised Treaty.

The decision reflects Ghana’s significant contributions to the sub-region and the bloc’s strategic goal of enhancing West Africa’s representation in regional and international organizations, particularly to safeguard ECOWAS interests at the African Union and other global platforms.

Ghana has historically held key leadership positions within the African Union, cementing its role as a regional leader with strong national, political, and cultural values. Notably, former President Nana Akufo-Addo served two co-terminus terms as Chairperson of the African Union in 2020 and 2023, following a unanimous endorsement by the ECOWAS Council of Ministers and subsequent approval by the Authority of Heads of State at an Extraordinary Session in February 2021
