Ministry of Foreign Affairs secures 120 jobs for evacuees from South Africa

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has secured 120 job opportunities for Ghanaians evacuated from South Africa amid rising xenophobic tensions, as part of efforts to support their reintegration and resettlement in Accra.

In a social media post, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa appealed to Chief Executive Officers and entrepreneurs to open their doors and support the initiative by absorbing evacuees into various sectors, describing Accra as a place of refuge and a fresh start for many returnees.

“We urge Ghanaian CEOs and entrepreneurs to support our JOBS INITIATIVE for our brothers and sisters being evacuated from South Africa. Already, 120 job offers have been secured,” he said.

The Minister further directed interested organisations to liaise with the Ministry’s Delivery Unit, headed by Ambassador Alexander Grant Ntrakwa, to coordinate available job opportunities and startup support aimed at stabilising the evacuees.

The Ghana High Commission has registered over 600 Ghanaians who are voluntarily leaving Johannesburg due to growing safety concerns linked to xenophobic attacks and an emerging climate of insecurity.

This follows reports of a June 30, 2026 ultimatum issued by vigilante groups for undocumented African immigrants to leave South Africa, which has heightened fear among foreign nationals in affected areas.

Meanwhile, the first batch of 300 Ghanaians evacuated from South Africa arrived safely in Accra on May 27, 2026, marking one of the first large-scale evacuations by an African country in response to the unrest. Similar evacuation efforts are also being undertaken by other countries, including Nigeria, as tensions continue.
