The Royal Norwegian Embassy in Ghana has held discussions with the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, on plans to convene a gathering of Ghanaian alumni who studied at Norwegian universities.
The proposed engagement seeks to bring together beneficiaries of Norway’s long-standing educational partnerships with Ghana and to showcase the impact of Norwegian-supported higher education initiatives on Ghana’s human capital development.
The planned alumni gathering is expected to highlight Norway’s contribution to Ghana’s development through scholarships, academic exchanges, and institutional partnerships. Professor Amfo herself is a beneficiary of this cooperation, having obtained both her MPhil and PhD in Linguistics from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). Her academic journey is seen as a reflection of the depth and sustainability of Norway–Ghana educational collaboration.
Discussions further indicated that the gathering would be framed around Norway’s broader engagement in Ghana, with particular emphasis on ongoing NORHED projects involving Ghanaian universities. The platform is also envisioned to create space for Norwegian–Ghanaian businesses to present their activities, fostering stronger links between academia, development cooperation, and private sector engagement.
NORHED, the Norwegian Programme for Capacity Development in Higher Education and Research for Development, focuses on strengthening higher education institutions in developing countries to produce high-quality graduates, promote inclusive education, and expand research output.
Higher education and research remain central to Norway’s development cooperation policy, reflecting its commitment to building intellectual capacity, promoting gender equality, advancing human rights, and supporting democratic governance.
In line with this cooperation, the University of Ghana and the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad) signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the University of Ghana School of Law’s Ocean Governance and Development Project, to further deepen academic and research ties between the two countries.
The proposed alumni gathering underscores the strategic depth of Ghana–Norway relations, shifting cooperation beyond traditional diplomacy into human development, knowledge exchange, and innovation.
By spotlighting education as a cornerstone of bilateral engagement, the initiative reinforces soft diplomacy, strengthens people-to-people ties, and positions higher education as a vehicle for long-term development cooperation aligned with the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It also reflects Norway’s commitment to evidence-based policymaking and institutional capacity-building, while affirming Ghana’s role as a key partner in advancing sustainable development through education and research in West Africa
