President Mahama embarks on foreign assignments

President John Mahama and President of the EU, Jose Manuel Baruso meet in Brussels during the 5th EU-Africa summit

President John Mahama on Monday embarked on a number of key international assignments that would take him about a week to return.

The President would attend the EU-Africa Summit, which is expected to attract some 40 African and 20 European leaders.

According to a statement from the Flagstaff House Communication Bureau, this year’s summit aims at building on the spirit of the 2007 joint strategy of Africa and European Union, under the theme, ‘Investing in People, Prosperity and Peace’.

President Mahama and other African leaders will be holding discussions with their European counterparts, on how to deepen co-operation, and foster human capital through education, training and creating additional incentives for investment to stimulate growth and create jobs.

The President would also lead a discussion on funding for small and medium Enterprises, (SMEs), and take part in a number of working sessions at the Summit, including a Business Forum.

In addition, President Mahama would attend a session being organized by the Africa Union Commission on the Roll Back Malaria programme, where he would be sharing Ghana’s experiences in providing comprehensive health for all, especially in eliminating Malaria.

The statement said on the margins of this 4th EU-Africa Summit, the President would hold bilateral meetings with a number of world leaders attending the Summit, including the President of France and the Chancellor of Germany.

As the new Chair of ECOWAS, President Mahama will seize the opportunity to champion the interests and positions of the ECOWAS sub-region on a number of issues,the statement added.

Later in the week, President Mahama would be the special keynote speaker at a London School of Economics event on Entrepreneurship.

He will then address the World Urban Forum in Columbia, before returning home early next week, the statement concluded.
