President John Mahama will today, Thursday May 9, 2013 inaugurate what will be Ghana’s first two megawatt solar plant.
A media advisory from the Presidency copied to ghanabusinessnews.com says the plant will be integrated into the national grid.
According to the advisory, the solar plant built by the VRA will be a major boost to the government’s renewable energy plan as it prepares to also focus on wind, biomass and waste to energy solutions.
The event takes place in Navrongo in the Upper East Region.
Ghana has been experiencing energy shortage leading to power rationing. The crisis was spurred on by the West African Gas Pipeline Company’s gas pipeline damage as well as the closure of one of its power plants. The situation has left the country with an energy deficit of around 300 megawatts.
Meanwhile the government says it is targeting to generate 5000MW of power by the year 2016.
