The U.S. Embassy in Ghana has congratulated Our Lady of Grace Senior High School for emerging winners of the Kumasi edition of the ACE Spoken Word Contest 2026.
In a post on social media, the Embassy commended the students for effectively using spoken word as a platform to share ideas, creativity, and impactful messages that resonate with their communities.
“We applaud all participating students for using spoken word to share ideas, creativity, and powerful messages with their communities,” the Embassy stated.
This year’s competition was held under the theme, “When the Whistle Blows, Borders Fade,” a concept inspired by the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The theme encouraged students to explore issues of unity, cultural exchange, global citizenship, and the power of sports to transcend geographical and social boundaries.
At the grand finale held on May 20, 2026, at the Great Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Our Lady of Grace SHS accumulated 91 points across three rounds to emerge victorious. The school outperformed competitors including Yaa Asantewaa Girls’ Senior High School, Oasis Christian Academy, and Bosomtwe Boys STEM SHS to claim the coveted trophy.
The ACE Spoken Word Contest is an educational initiative that seeks to empower young people to express themselves on critical social and global issues through poetry and performance. The competition provides students with a platform to develop public speaking, creative writing, and critical thinking skills while amplifying youth voices on matters of national and international significance.
Supported by the U.S. Embassy, the contest brings together senior high schools from across Ghana to engage in healthy competition while promoting creativity, leadership, cultural understanding, and civic engagement. Through spoken word, participants are encouraged to use storytelling and performance as tools for dialogue, advocacy, and positive social change.
Attention now shifts to the Accra edition of the competition, where Forces Senior High Technical School, O’Reilly Senior High School, Accra Girls Senior High School, and Ghana Christian International High School will battle for supremacy. The contest is scheduled to take place at the Cedi Conference Centre of the University of Ghana, Legon.
