The Minister for Education, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, on Tuesday, July 29, 2014 received an eight-member delegation from Uganda at her office in Accra.
The delegation, led by the Ugandan Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Sports, Dr. Rose Nasali Lukwago, is in the country to familiarise with Ghana’s education system and learn from its reforms.
Welcoming them, Prof Opoku-Agyemang said Africa should put into education; reform programmes that uplifts Africans as a people and makes them proud of their heritage. Saying that “it is when people build their confidence that they are able to come about with developmental changes.”
She said education review process should include the move from grammar alone to grammar and skills.
She cautioned that, as we focus on jobs and skills there is the need to train children to become thinkers.
Prof Opoku-Agyemang assured the delegation that as Uganda went through reforms, Ghana would share some experiences it had acquired over the years.
“In Ghana, vocation learning starts at the junior high level to help learners who would branch into the vocation profession at the senior high level,” she told them. She called on the delegation to well-package vocational and technical skills to draw the interest of learners.
Ghana, the minister noted, has about 29 special schools mostly for the visually challenged and hearing impaired. These schools are supported by government so that guardians would not decide on depriving such children with special needs.
With girl child, Prof Opoku-Agyemang said, Ghana is working hard with the introduction of many interventions to keep many girls in school to the highest level. These she said included science clinics for girls.
On her part, Dr. Rose Nassali Lukwago said Ugandan’s lower education curriculum reform would be made specific based on what had been working for them and what would work for them as a people.
Present at the meeting was Mr. Enoch Cobbinah, Chief Director and Mr. Paul Kofi Krampa, Public Relations Director of the Education Ministry.
The delegation, who had also visited Malaysia, toured some schools and agencies under the Education Ministry to have the first hand information of their activities. They have since left the country.
