UN Offers To Assist Ghana Deal With Disaster Prevention

UNThe United Nations Office in Ghana has expressed its readiness to help and support the coordinated efforts of government to solve the perennial floods in the capital.

The United Nations Resident Coordinator in Ghana, Ms Christine Evans-Klock, declared:”We are prepared to work with other stakeholders to achieve that goal”, when with the Deputy National Coordinator of NADMO, Mr Ebenezer Dosso, she toured the disaster-hit areas in Accra, including the GOIL filling Station at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle and some residential areas.

Ms Evans-Klock expressed her condolences to the victims and bereaved families of the Accra Floods and fires disasters.

She said she was on her annual leave before the disaster last Wednesday, but she had to return to Accra to assess the situation on how NADMO was coordinating responses on the ground in efforts to stop future occurrences.

Mr Dosso also expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and those injured in the disaster and affirmed the NADMO’s support to ensure that every household get relief items.

They also visited the Odaw the River and the New Life SDA Church.

In related development, NADMO has started distributing relief items to the affected Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies in the Greater Accra Region.

The items include mosquito nets and coils, used clothing, blankets, mattresses, buckets, plates, water, gallons, basins and cups.

The areas covered under the service, which was started on Saturday, June 6, include Ablekuma Central, Ablekuma North, Ablekuma South, Ayawaso West, Ayawaso Central, North Okaikoi North and Okaikoi South.

Many people died in the torrential rains that hit Accra last Wednesday, June 3, and the Fire outbreak at the GOIL Filling Station at Circle.
