The Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, has engaged Ambassadors and diplomatic representatives from Japan, Germany, Italy, Israel, South Korea and Switzerland to strengthen cooperation in Ghana’s environment, science and technology sectors.
The engagements provided an opportunity for Dr Agyeman-Rawlings and Ghana’s international partners to explore new opportunities for cooperation in environmental sustainability, scientific research, technology, innovation and sustainable development.
On the part of the diplomatic representatives, it gave them the opportunity to reaffirm their respective countries’ commitment to advancing shared interests with Ghana in environment, science and technology, following the appointment of Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings as Minister for Environment, Science and Technology.
She received Israeli Ambassador Roey Gilad, Japanese Ambassador Hiroshi Yoshimoto, South Korean Ambassador Park Kyongsig, German Ambassador Frederik Landshöft and Italian Ambassador Laura Ranalli.
Dr Agyeman-Rawlings assumed the portfolio in August 2026, following the death of her predecessor, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, in the August 6, 2025 helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight people.
The discussions come against the backdrop of existing cooperation between Ghana and the six countries in areas relevant to the Ministry’s mandate.
Ghana and Japan, for instance, are deepening cooperation in space science and technology, with discussions focusing on the use of Japanese space technologies for environmental monitoring and disaster management. A Ghana-Japan MoU on Space Business Cooperation also provides for the co-development of space technologies, human-capacity development and sustainable solutions.
Ghana’s cooperation with Germany includes climate research, environmental protection and circular-economy initiatives. German-supported programmes in Ghana include the West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL), while development cooperation has also supported initiatives in plastic waste management and recycling.
With Italy, Ghana has established cooperation in scientific research and technological innovation, including opportunities for scientific collaboration and innovation initiatives. The Italian Embassy in Ghana has also promoted bilateral scientific cooperation and technology-focused innovation programmes.
Ghana-Israel cooperation has included water management, wastewater treatment, water recycling, agricultural technology and other technology-driven solutions. These areas have provided opportunities for the application of Israeli expertise to Ghana’s environmental and agricultural challenges.
South Korea has also emerged as a partner in areas including STEM education, digital innovation, artificial intelligence and environmental cooperation. In 2026, Ghana and Korea advanced cooperation on a STEM Education Programme with Digital Innovation, while Korea also participated in the Korea-Africa Environmental Cooperation Forum.
Switzerland, meanwhile, has a longstanding climate partnership with Ghana, including cooperation under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement on climate protection and emissions-reduction projects, alongside broader cooperation on environmental sustainability and development.
The engagements underscored the value of international partnerships in mobilising expertise, technology, research capacity and innovative approaches to address Ghana’s emerging environmental and developmental challenges.
They further highlighted the importance of sustained diplomatic dialogue in deepening Ghana’s relationships with partners across Europe, Asia and the Middle East and aligning international cooperation with national priorities in environmental protection, scientific advancement, technological development and sustainable growth.
The Ghanaian side expressed appreciation for the discussions, describing such engagements as an important component of building stronger international partnerships capable of supporting national development priorities.
