Ablakwa excited over Delta Airlines Accra to Atlanta resumption, Air Transat debut operations

Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Kudzeto Ablakwa, has expressed profound joy following the announcement of the resumption of Delta Air Lines’ seasonal flights between Accra and Atlanta, as well as the launch of Canada’s Air Transat’s premier direct flights from Ghana to Canada beginning June 17, 2026.

In a post on X, the Minister said the operations of the two airlines mark a significant boost to Ghana’s economic and bilateral objectives, enhancing tourism, cultural exchange, and connectivity between Ghana, the United States, and Canada.

“I am excited about the re-introduction of Delta Air Lines’ non-stop flight from Accra to Atlanta (USA), which commenced operations yesterday, December 1, 2025. Ghana equally applauds Air Transat of Canada for initiating a historic non-stop flight from Ghana to Canada, which begins on June 17, 2026,” he wrote.

Delta Air Lines officially relaunched the Accra–Atlanta route today, 13 years after last operating it. The ceremony at the Kotoka International Airport was attended by the U.S. Embassy’s Charge d’Affaires, Rolf Olson, and the Managing Director of the Ghana Airports Company Limited, Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare.

The Accra–Atlanta service will be operated with the Airbus A330-900neo, a state-of-the-art aircraft with a maximum seating capacity of 465 and a range of 7,350 nautical miles. Powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines, the aircraft incorporates advanced flight systems and next-generation aerodynamics built for both short- and long-haul efficiency.

Delta is expected to operate 46 round-trip flights during the peak holiday season, with the final departure scheduled for January 15. The A330-900neo replaces the A330-200 and 767-300ER that previously serviced the route more than a decade ago.

The revival of the Accra–Atlanta route reflects the growing momentum of the North America–Africa aviation market. Delta recently launched its first-ever route from Atlanta to Marrakech, Morocco, while Air Transat has announced new services from Montreal to Accra, Dakar (Senegal) and Agadir (Morocco).

Meanwhile, Canadian leisure airline Air Transat officially confirmed on November 20, 2025, that its new direct Ghana–Canada flights will operate from June 17, 2026, with two weekly non-stop flights scheduled for Wednesdays and Sundays. The airline will use the Airbus A330, which has a seating capacity of 330, flying between Toronto Pearson International Airport and Kotoka International Airport.

The Canadian High Commission described the development as a major milestone in implementing the Bilateral Air Services Agreement initialed ad referendum in March 2025 between the Governments of Canada and Ghana. The direct service will offer new opportunities for travelers seeking to explore tourism, heritage, trade, culture, and connectivity between the two countries.

This initiative forms part of Canada’s broader air agreements with over 125 countries. The Accra–Toronto direct route is expected to deliver significant benefits to Canada’s Ghanaian diaspora by providing a long-awaited convenient travel option without the need for transit flights. It also expands opportunities for Canadian travelers interested in visiting Ghana and the wider West African subregion for tourism, heritage exploration, business, or academic pursuits.
