The Confucius Institute of the University of Ghana has partnered with the Chinese Embassy to organize English-Chinese quiz competition for the public to strengthen oral communication abilities between Ghana and China.
The competition formed part of activities initiated to commemorate the 55th anniversary of China-Ghana diplomatic relations, and to herald the upcoming forum on China-Africa Cooperation Summit in Johannesburg in South Africa.
Contestants provided answers to questions bordering on both Ghanaian and Chinese history and contemporary affairs.
Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, Minister of Education, noted that competitions, such as quizzes, ought to be encouraged and supported since they presented opportunities for the youth to learn and broaden their knowledge based on current affairs and history of their countries.
She commended the participants for taking steps to participate in something she described as not so familiar with, and assured them of the Education Ministry’s support for such important activities.
The Minister lauded the Institute and the Embassy for undertaking the exercise necessary to reinforce the interest of both countries deepening their knowledge in their cultures and values.
Mrs Ashi Quaye-Doku, the Administrator of the Institute, highlighting the importance of the event as planned activities to celebrate the countries 55 years of diplomatic ties said: “as an institute, our main aim is to spread the Chinese language and culture, therefore this is an opportunity for us to achieve our goals.”
She said information on the competition was sent to both countries through the social media and public places so that interested persons could register with the Institute to participate.
The first prize winners were given Lenovo laptops; the second awardees had ipads; the third and fourth winners received Samsung and Nokia phones, with the rest receiving cameras and headphones as consolation prizes.
The Ghana-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and the Ghana Association of Chinese Companies, as well as the China Enterprises Chamber of Commerce in Ghana; the Ghana-Chinese Traders Association and the Chinese News Agency,. supported the event.
