Deputy Israeli Ambassador to Ghana condemns Iran’s attack on civilian areas

The Deputy Israeli Ambassador to Ghana, Aviel Avraham, has strongly criticized Iran over missile attacks on civilian areas following strikes on southern Israel, including his hometown, Arad.

The strikes form part of an escalating wave of hostilities in the ongoing conflict involving Israel, Iran, and the United States, with both sides exchanging attacks on strategic and civilian-linked locations. According to Israel’s Health Ministry, multiple casualties were recorded after a missile struck near Dimona, home to Israel’s main nuclear facility and located close to Arad.

The latest developments are widely viewed as retaliation for earlier strikes on Iran’s Natanz nuclear enrichment complex, which Israel claims significantly degraded Tehran’s nuclear capabilities. The exchange marks one of the most intense phases of the conflict since it escalated earlier this year.

Describing the situation as “extremely difficult days” for Israel, Avraham characterized Iran as a “brutal enemy” that openly calls for the country’s destruction. He warned that continued attacks on populated areas pose a grave threat to civilians and deepen insecurity across affected communities.

He expressed particular concern for residents of Arad, noting that his hometown was directly impacted by the missile strikes. According to him, the increasing frequency of such attacks underscores the vulnerability of civilian populations amid the intensifying conflict.

Despite the strikes, Avraham confirmed that his family remains safe, having taken shelter during the attack. He noted that the experience reflects how the conflict is affecting ordinary families, even those far removed from the frontlines of diplomacy.

“As someone who grew up in Arad and whose family still lives there, the impact occurred near the neighborhood where I was raised. In a conversation yesterday, my father, Dawit, described the sheer force of the explosion: windows in nearby buildings shattered into pieces. Fortunately, my family was in a shelter at the time and remained safe. However, many others suddenly found themselves facing fear, destruction, and deep uncertainty.” He stated.

He added that the missile strike caused significant damage, injured dozens, and forced the evacuation of hundreds of residents, highlighting the scale and intensity of the attack on civilian areas.

Avraham called for what he described as consistent and impartial international condemnation of attacks on civilians, urging world leaders and human rights organizations to respond with equal urgency when Israel is targeted. He argued that global reactions to such incidents have often appeared uneven.

“These missiles do not distinguish between communities: they strike anyone in their path. For the Ayatollah regime and its proxies, targeting civilians is not a mistake. It is the objective. For this very reason, world leaders, human rights organizations, and all those who are quick to speak in the name of justice must raise their voices clearly when Israel is under attack.”  he added.

The remarks reinforce Israel’s call for international solidarity, as the Head of Mission in Ghana, Roey Gilad, continues to engage Ghanaian authorities for support, despite Ghana’s longstanding non-aligned foreign policy stance.

The conflict has intensified in recent weeks following threats by U.S. President Donald Trump to target Iran’s energy infrastructure, including its power plants, if Tehran failed to de-escalate tensions. Trump issued a 48-hour ultimatum linked to the reopening of key shipping routes, warning of severe military consequences.

However, in a significant shift, Trump later announced a temporary pause on planned strikes against Iran’s power facilities, citing what he described as “productive” or “constructive” engagements with Iranian officials. While he suggested that Iran had shown willingness to engage diplomatically, Iranian authorities have publicly denied any direct negotiations, even as indirect contacts reportedly continue through regional intermediaries
