The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Emelia Arthur, has expressed Ghana’s condolences to the Royal Family and the people of Norway following the death of King Harald V.
The Minister signed the Book of Condolence at the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Accra on Friday, September 4, 2026, in a gesture of solidarity with Norway as the country mourns its late monarch.
She was accompanied by the Chief Director of the Ministry, Dr Afisah Zakariah, and the Deputy Executive Director of the Fisheries Commission, Dr Eric Cobbinah.
In her message, Ms Arthur conveyed Ghana’s sympathy to the Norwegian people and described the gesture as a reflection of the cordial relations between Ghana and Norway.
“Ghana stands in solidarity with the people of Norway during this period of national mourning. Our expression of sympathy reflects the cordial relations between our two countries and our shared commitment to strengthening these bonds,” she stated.
King Harald V died on August 28, 2026, at Rikshospitalet in Oslo, aged 89. He had served as Norway’s monarch for 35 years, having ascended the throne in 1991 following the death of his father, King Olav V.
His death ushered in a change of monarch, with his son assuming the throne as King Haakon VIII. The new King formally took his oath of allegiance to the Norwegian Constitution before the Storting on September 1.
King Harald’s funeral is being held today, Wednesday, September 9, at Oslo Cathedral. The coffin is being taken from the Royal Palace in a ceremonial procession beginning at noon, ahead of the funeral service at 1:00 p.m.
Following the service, the procession will continue to Akershus Castle Church, where a private ceremony will be held. King Harald will subsequently be laid to rest alongside members of the Norwegian Royal Family.
The funeral marks the conclusion of Norway’s period of national mourning, which began following the King’s death on August 28.
King Harald was widely associated with continuity and a modern Norwegian monarchy. In a tribute following his death, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre remembered him for his warmth, his love for the Norwegian people and his ability to bring the country together.
The Book of Condolence opened at the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Accra has provided members of Ghana’s diplomatic community and other well-wishers with an opportunity to formally convey their sympathies to the Norwegian Royal Family and people during the period of mourning.
