Interior Ministry of Cambodia dismisses ultimatum for Africans to leave as false

The Ministry of Interior of the Royal Government of Cambodia has dismissed viral claims circulating in sections of Ghanaian media alleging that the country had issued an ultimatum for African nationals to leave Cambodia before the expiration of a supposed visa waiver on May 31, 2026.

Ghana and Kenya were among the African countries mentioned in the fabricated statement, which falsely claimed that foreign nationals who failed to comply with the alleged directive would face arrest from June 1, 2026.

In an official statement, the Ministry of Interior categorically described both the information and the accompanying document as false and fabricated. Authorities said the publications were a deliberate attempt to distort facts, mislead international public opinion, and damage the reputation and image of the Kingdom of Cambodia.

“The Ministry of Interior of the Royal Government of Cambodia categorically rejects the fabrication of this public document and the dissemination of such false information. These publications are considered a deliberate attempt to distort facts, mislead international public opinion, and damage the reputation and image of the Kingdom of Cambodia,” the statement said.

The Ministry further emphasized that Cambodia remains open to foreigners within its legal framework, including tourists, investors, foreign workers, and residents, stressing that no discriminatory measures had been introduced against African nationals or any other group.

Authorities also urged both local and international media outlets to uphold high standards of professionalism by verifying information before publication, particularly in an era of widespread misinformation and disinformation that could carry serious international implications.

“The Ministry of Interior of the Royal Government of Cambodia calls upon all national and international media outlets to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and responsibility in disseminating information in order to avoid creating misunderstanding and misinformation regarding Cambodia among the international community,” the statement added.

The fabricated document that circulated online falsely claimed that foreigners whose fines had been cleared were required to leave Cambodia on or before May 31, 2026. It further alleged that any foreign national remaining in the country from June 1, 2026, would be arrested, jailed for two years, and fined $8,000 before being allowed to leave Cambodia.
