Ken Ofori-Atta released from U.S. detention following court order

Ghana’s former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, has been released from detention in the United States following a judicial order.

The development was confirmed in a press release dated April 8, 2026, issued by his legal representatives Minkah-Premo, Osei-Bonsu, Bruce-Cathline & Partners, acting on behalf of Mr. Ofori-Atta.

According to the statement, Mr. Ofori-Atta was released from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody on April 7, 2026, and has since returned home to be with his family.

The legal team noted that the former minister remains committed to due process as he continues to address matters relating to his case under U.S. law.

“Mr. Ofori-Atta remains fully committed to use due process in defense of his rights as guaranteed under the constitution and laws of the United States,” the statement said.

Mr. Ofori‑Atta was first detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on January 6, 2026, at an apartment complex in Washington, D.C.

He was subsequently transferred to the Caroline Detention Facility in Virginia, where he remained in custody while U.S. authorities reviewed his immigration status and Ghana’s potential extradition request.

Following his detention, a medical assessment on January 13, 2026 confirmed he was fit to remain in custody despite ongoing health concerns.

Legal proceedings then progressed, and on February 26, 2026, Ghana’s Office of the Special Prosecutor confirmed in court that two separate proceedings had commenced in the United States , one relating to immigration violations and another tied to Ghana’s formal extradition request.

The Ghanaian government had formally submitted extradition documents earlier in February, with U.S. authorities acknowledging receipt while awaiting further legal determination.

The statement further indicated that Mr. Ofori-Atta and his family expressed gratitude for the support received during the period of his detention.

“He and his family remain thankful to God and all those who have offered prayers and support during this period,” the release added.

The case continues to be closely monitored as further legal proceedings are expected to unfold.
