Mnangagwa to visit Ghana for bilateral talks

President of Zimbabwe, Emmerson Mnangagwa, is expected to undertake an official three-day state visit to Ghana aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries across key sectors.

The visit, scheduled from Wednesday, April 1 to Friday, April 3, 2026, will commence with full military honours at the Kotoka International Airport, including an inspection of a Guard of Honour mounted by the Ghana Armed Forces and a 21-gun salute.

President Mnangagwa’s visit is expected to culminate in the signing of key Memoranda of Understanding in various areas of mutual interest, building on the inaugural session of the Ghana-Zimbabwe Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation (PJCC) held on March 27, 2026. The agreements are expected to deepen cooperation and institutionalize bilateral engagement between the two countries.

The Zimbabwean Head of State will also be hosted to a state banquet on the evening of his arrival, in honour of the longstanding diplomatic and historical relations between Ghana and the Southern African nation.

Major bilateral talks are scheduled to take place at the Peduase Presidential Lodge, where President Mnangagwa and his delegation will meet with John Dramani Mahama and the Ghanaian delegation. Discussions are expected to focus on enhancing cooperation in trade, tourism, agriculture, health, sanitation, anti-corruption efforts, and tackling youth unemployment.

As part of the visit, President Mnangagwa will tour key infrastructure and development projects, including the Sweden Ghana Medical Centre and the Accra Compost and Recycling Plant, where he will receive briefings on Ghana’s progress in healthcare delivery and waste management.

He is also expected to visit the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, the final resting place of Ghana’s first President, Kwame Nkrumah, whose leadership played a pivotal role in Africa’s independence movements and Pan-Africanism.

President Mnangagwa’s visit marks his second trip to Ghana in three years, following his participation in the 30th Annual Meetings of the African Export-Import Bank held in Accra in 2023, where he was accompanied by Zimbabwe’s Finance and Economic Development Minister, Mthuli Ncube.

Ghana and Zimbabwe share longstanding historical ties dating back to the era of African liberation movements. Ghana’s first President, Kwame Nkrumah, was a strong supporter of Zimbabwe’s independence struggle, offering political backing to liberation movements fighting colonial rule in then Southern Rhodesia.

Following Zimbabwe’s independence in 1980, diplomatic relations between Ghana and Zimbabwe were formally strengthened, with both countries maintaining resident diplomatic missions and engaging through continental platforms such as the African Union.

The two countries have also deepened cooperation through bilateral mechanisms such as the Ghana-Zimbabwe Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation (PJCC), with the inaugural session held on March 27, 2026, aimed at expanding collaboration in trade, agriculture, education, and investment. Additionally, President Emmerson Mnangagwa previously visited Ghana in 2023 to participate in the 30th Annual Meetings of the African Export-Import Bank in Accra, highlighting continued high-level engagement between the two countries.

Educational and people-to-people ties also form a key pillar of relations. Zimbabwe’s founding leader, Robert Mugabe, lived and taught in Ghana between 1958 and 1960, where he met his first wife, Sally Hayfron. This historical connection has remained symbolic of the shared Pan-African vision and enduring diplomatic friendship between Ghana and Zimbabwe.
