The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Ghana, Andrei Ordash, has paid a courtesy call on the Speaker of Parliament as part of efforts to strengthen bilateral relations and deepen parliamentary cooperation between Ghana and Russia.
The meeting focused on opportunities to enhance cooperation between the two countries, including preparations for Ghana’s participation in the Third Russia–Africa Summit, scheduled to take place in Moscow from October 28 to 29, 2026.
Ambassador Ordash invited the Speaker and Members of Parliament to participate in the summit, which is expected to provide a platform for African countries and Russia to advance cooperation in trade, investment, development, technology and other areas of mutual interest.
He noted that Ghana’s parliamentary participation would add an important legislative dimension to the summit and provide an avenue for lawmakers to contribute to discussions on the future of Russia–Africa relations.
The Ambassador also highlighted prospects for enhanced cooperation in defence and security, against the backdrop of the longstanding military-technical cooperation between Ghana and Russia. The two countries signed a military-technical cooperation agreement in June 2016 covering areas including weapons supplies and joint training.
The discussions further considered the activities of the Russia–Ghana Parliamentary Friendship Association, with both sides expressing optimism that the composition of the current Parliament could provide fresh impetus to the association and strengthen inter-parliamentary relations.
The Speaker, in his remarks, recalled his previous visits to Russia and engagements with his counterparts in the Russian Parliament, underscoring those interactions had contributed to a better understanding between the two countries and strengthened parliamentary ties.
He reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to deepening its longstanding relations with Russia and expressed the hope that continued engagement would advance the mutual interests and prosperity of both countries.
The meeting comes as Ghana and Russia seek to broaden their bilateral relationship beyond traditional areas of cooperation. Ambassador Ordash has identified trade, technology, education, energy, agriculture and digitalisation among the areas in which Moscow is seeking deeper cooperation with Accra.
The upcoming Russia–Africa Summit is expected to provide a further platform for advancing these areas of cooperation, with artificial intelligence, digitalisation and independent payment systems among the issues Russia says will feature prominently on the agenda.
The engagement underscored the shared commitment of Ghana and Russia to expanding bilateral and inter-parliamentary cooperation and building stronger institutional ties in support of mutual development and international cooperation.
