Sierra Leone’s Foreign Minister, Alhaji Musa Timothy Kabba, has chaired a high-level ECOWAS ministerial meeting in Accra focused on selecting and evaluating statutory appointees expected to lead the regional bloc’s institutions over the next four years.
The three-day meeting of the Ad Hoc Ministerial Committee of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) was held at the Palms Hotel in Accra and brought together ministers and senior officials from across the West African subregion to interview candidates for key leadership positions within the ECOWAS Commission.
The interviews covered several senior positions, including Vice President of the ECOWAS Commission, Commissioners, Auditor General and Directors of specialised institutions within the regional bloc.
The meeting comes at a critical time for ECOWAS as the regional bloc faces growing security, political and institutional challenges, including terrorism, unconstitutional changes of government and the recent withdrawal of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger from the organisation. The selection of strong institutional leadership is therefore being viewed as central to efforts aimed at reinforcing regional integration and restoring confidence in the bloc.
Addressing participants at the close of the session, Minister Kabba said the work undertaken by the committee “goes to the very heart of the Community’s future,” while commending members for their commitment and diligence throughout the exercise.
“Over the past days, we have engaged in a process that goes to the very heart of our community’s future, and this is a testament to our shared commitment to the long-term credibility and effectiveness of ECOWAS,” he stated.
According to him, the officials selected through the process would be expected to navigate an increasingly complex regional environment, strengthen integration efforts and deliver meaningful results for citizens across West Africa.
He further stressed the need for accountability and performance, noting that member states must continue to support ECOWAS institutions while ensuring high standards are maintained.
Minister Kabba concluded that the exercise was not merely about filling positions, but about making strategic and consequential choices concerning the future leadership of ECOWAS institutions.
