Benjamin Crump to speak on reparations at Diaspora Summit 2025

Renowned American civil rights lawyer Benjamin Crump has arrived in Ghana ahead of the Diaspora Summit 2025, where he is expected to deliver a keynote address advocating strongly for reparative justice for Africa and people of African descent.

Crump was formally received by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and his delegation. The engagement is centred on advancing Pan-African unity, strengthening diaspora collaboration, and deepening global justice initiatives that connect Africa with its diaspora.

Widely regarded as one of the most influential civil rights attorneys of his generation, Crump has led some of the most consequential racial justice cases in modern history. As attorney for the family of George Floyd, his advocacy, combined with sustained global protests against racism and police brutality, helped catalyse significant reforms in the United States.

These include the establishment of a National Police Misconduct Registry, reforms to federal standards for prosecuting police misconduct by expanding culpability beyond “willful” acts to those that are “knowing or reckless”, the enforcement of mandatory body-worn cameras, and limits on the use of qualified immunity in civil actions.

Beyond the Floyd case, Crump has represented the families of Trayvon Martin, Breonna Taylor, Michael Brown, Keenan Anderson, Sonya Massey, and Tyre Nichols, as well as the estate of Malcolm X. His legal work also includes representing nearly 200 concertgoers affected by the 2021 Astroworld Festival tragedy.

Often described as “Black America’s Attorney General”, Crump’s arrival was warmly welcomed by Minister Ablakwa, who described it as a pleasure to host a global figure whose legal career has been defined by resilience and an unwavering commitment to justice in the face of systemic oppression.

This visit forms part of Crump’s continued engagements with Ghana, particularly in the areas of reparative justice, legal empowerment, and economic redress, reinforcing the country’s growing role as a convening space for global African dialogue.

The theme of Diaspora Summit 2025 aligns closely with the African Union’s agenda on “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations”, a commitment that has been expanded into a Decade of Reparations from 2026 to 2036. The Summit feeds into broader continental efforts to confront historical injustices including the Transatlantic Slave Trade, colonialism, apartheid, and genocide.

Convened by the Government of Ghana under the auspices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Diaspora Summit 2025 provides a high-level global platform for dialogue, policy alignment, and collective action on reparations and restorative justice.

Grounded in the recognition that the enduring legacies of slavery, colonial exploitation, racial violence, and systemic dispossession continue to shape present-day inequalities, the Summit brings together Heads of State, policymakers, scholars, activists, cultural institutions, and diaspora leaders to advance a future anchored in truth, healing, dignity, and justice for Africans and people of African descent worldwide
