The Ghana Embassy in France has held talks with boxing organisations including Harmattan Birds, Club Drouais, and Bukom Boxing Gym to explore partnerships aimed at strengthening boxing collaboration between Ghana and France.
The Embassy hosted a 14-member delegation representing the three organisations on April 21, 2026, describing the engagement as a strategic effort to deepen sports diplomacy and promote bilateral cooperation through boxing.
The discussions build on France’s continued support for Ghana’s boxing sector, which is seeking to regain its prominence on the global stage. Ghana’s boxing fraternity, including the national Black Bombers, has in recent years highlighted the importance of international partnerships in revitalising the sport.
The talks in Paris mark a further step in consolidating Ghana–France collaboration in boxing, at a time when the sport is experiencing renewed interest, driven by high-profile bouts and emerging rivalries that are attracting significant public attention.
The visiting delegation was led by King David Neequaye alongside Manuel Argentin, and coincided with a major boxing event in Dreux titled Gala de Boxe: Road to Ghana 2026. At the event, Mathias Ashitey, a SWAG Boxer of the Year award winner, emerged victorious in the flyweight division.
Ghana’s Ambassador to France, Mavis Ama Frimpong, attended the event and was received by the Mayor of Dreux. She witnessed firsthand the level of sportsmanship and growing collaboration between Ghanaian and French boxing stakeholders.
The Embassy described the engagement as more than a sporting contest, but rather a symbolic celebration of partnership between Accra and Paris. It emphasised Ghana’s commitment to leveraging sports as a tool for diplomacy, talent development, and cross-cultural exchange.
Ambassador Frimpong drew parallels between Ghana’s resilience in boxing and its broader national identity, noting that the country’s legacy in the sport continues to shape its global image. She referenced legendary figures such as Azumah Nelson and Ike Quartey as pioneers whose achievements continue to inspire a new generation.
She further stressed the need to build on this legacy through structured partnerships that promote youth empowerment, technical exchanges, and mentorship opportunities between Ghanaian and French boxing institutions.
In recognition of her support for sports diplomacy, the delegation expressed appreciation to Ambassador Frimpong. In response, she congratulated the team on their discipline and performance, commending their role in strengthening Ghana–France relations and encouraging them to continue striving for excellence both inside and outside the ring.
