The Embassy of the Russian Federation on June 12, 2014 held a reception to mark Russia’s day of independence in Accra.

In his speech, Dr. Igor Degtyarev, Chargé d’Affaires of the Russian Embassy, lauded Ghana for being a shining democracy in Africa, and its ability to develop itself rapidly.

He said, work has started this year on the Inter-governmental Russia/Ghana Commission for Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation, with its co-chairmen having been appointed, adding that this year the Commission would be holding its first meeting in Moscow.

Dr. Degtyarev mentioned that Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, have built a new union – Eurasian Economic Union, eliminating practically the borders between each other.

“We expect that Armenia and Kyrgyzya will join the Union till the end of this year,” he said.

He said today’s world lives in a time of collision of mentalities, declaring that Russian mentality at present is ruled mostly by pragmatism.

“We are of the opinion that liberal values and ideals are not the nails to be hammered into life without appropriate checks and balances, though with the best hammer in the world because it can lead to bloody revolutions and coup-d’etats, like the Bolsheviks one which as the Russian people know very well, was without sense and without mercy,” Dr. Degtyarev stated.

Russia Day is a national holiday of the Federation of Russia which marks the establishing of Russia as an independent country after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. It also commemorates the creation of the post of the President of the Russian Federation, the national flag and the national anthem.

However, in recent years, the Day, marked on the June 12 of every year since 1992, is used as an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of Russians worldwide as well as a general celebration of the Russian culture and identity.
